Thailand set the pistes of their home Para Fencing World Cup alight on Friday (21 November), storming to two golds in Nakhon Ratchasima.
Paralympic champion Saysunee Jana delivered the hosts their first gold medal of the day in the women’s foil category B.
Jana is known for her prowess across weapons and made the most of the home advantage once again in her most successful – the women’s epee category B, storming to victory to the delight of her gathered fans and teammates.
Her win against Neutral Para Athlete Victoria Boykova felt like a breeze as Jana used the energy in the room to build towards a 15-7 scoreline in the final.
Neutral Para Athlete Kristina Fiaklistava and Italy’s Julia-Anna Markowska were the bronze medallists.
Chitiphat Charoenta followed up with Thailand’s second gold in the men’s sabre category B whilst teammate Visit Kingmanaw left with bronze.
Neutral Para Athlete Alexander Kurzin was the silver medallist and refugee athlete Amelio Castro took bronze. The third-place finish for Castro follows on from his same-place result earlier in the year in Pisa, rounding off an excellent season.
South Korea’s Sunmi Kim secured the first World Cup win of her career in the women’s foil category A.
Kim faced Great Britain’s Gemma Collis in the final with the latter buoyed by a podium finish from yesterday’s sabre.
But it was Kim that had the edge, managing to hold her nerve to win 15-9.
Hong Kong, China’s Yu Chui Yee nabbed her latest World Cup podium as did South Korea’s Paralympic silver medallist Hyo Kyong Kwon.
Paralympic and World Championships bronze medallist, Italy’s Edoardo Giordan, was victorious at a World Cup for the second time this season in the men’s sabre category A.
Giordan managed to get past German Paralympic champion Maurice Schmidt 15-8 in the final, ending his sabre season on the right note.
Julius Haupt joined his compatriot Schmidt on the podium, securing bronze alongside Neutral Para Athlete Mikhail Karpov.
The Nakhon Ratchasima 2025 Para Fencing World Cup continues on Saturday with the men’s epee and women’s foil category A and B. The final World Cup of 2025 is taking place as part of the World Abilitysport Games.
