Thailand’s Thitirat Pengprasittipong, Duean Nakprasit and Saysunee Jana joined forces to claim double gold in the women’s team epee and team sabre on the last day of action at the 2025 Para Fencing World Cup in Solo, Indonesia, on Thursday (18 September).
Competition finished on a high with the new 20-point format making its latest appearance across weapons. Previously not as important as in the longer team events format, now every point really counts across just four rounds.
Great Britain’s Gemma Collis and Emily holder dug deep as a team of two to face Pengprasittipong, Nakprasit and Paralympic champion Saysunee Jana, the latter also being the individual gold medallist from earlier in the week from the category B, in the women’s team epee. Meanwhile Great Britain benefitted from Collis being a silver medallist in the category A.
Thailand proved to be too strong for Great Britain in the end, but Emily Holder gained useful experience under the lights and pressure of the finals piste in a match that showcased the increasing strength of both countries.
Hong Kong, China, rounded off a great campaign at Pui Fan Shan, Nga Ting Tong and Yu Chui Yee secured bronze.
After a quick change of jackets and impressive switch of mindset to sabre, Thailand then returned to the final piste against Georgia.
There a strong team of Irma Khetsuriani, Nina Tibilashvili and Gvantsa Zadishvili was waiting. All three women had finished on the podium in the individual sabre in their respective categories.
Khetsuriani opened the match against Jana with a 5-2 score before handing over the baton to Tibilashvili who just about edged Pengprasittipong. Nonetheless the Thai fencers had bought her team right back into contention.
Jana was not going to make the same mistakes against Khetsuriani in the next match, handing the baton to Pengprasittipong who strode away from Zadishvili to claim the gold.
South Korea’s Eun Hyeo Cho, Sunmi Kim and Hyo Kyeong Kwong rounded off a great competition for South Korea, securing bronze against Hong Kong, China.
Thailand, however, had to settle for silver in the men’s team foil.
Thailand’s Boonsiri Sanitmuanwai, Phoopa Sae-Sim and Visit Kingmanaw took on Naoki Yasu, Shintaro Kano and Sasajima Takaaki of Japan in the gold medal match.
Kingmanaw gave his country the early lead with a narrow victory over Takaaki in a repeat of the final from the individual category B where the Japanese fencer had emerged the victor.
But Sae-Sim was waiting in the wings to take on Kano in the next round, giving his team a three-point buffer in return.
Takaaki was then up against Kingmanaw again but used what he had learnt from his first-round defeat to turn the tables in the same direction for Japan.
The final round clash between Phoopa Sae-Sim and Naoki Yasu proved to be even more epic.
Sae-Sim gave his team the lead once more but Yasu pulled the scores back level at 18-18 before taking the lead and finishing the job.
India excelled in the bronze medal match as Omm Prakash Behera, Venkateshwar Ramesh Rao and Rakhal Kumar Sethy overcame Germany.
The Solo 2025 Para Fencing World Cup featured men’s and women’s individual category A and B and team events across weapons from 15-18 September for Indonesia’s first World Cup.
The circuit will now head to Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, for the final World Cup of the year from 20-23 November.
