Successful returns for Para fencing Paralympians in Pisa

13/03/2025

The stars came out to play on Thursday (13 March) as a series of Paralympians and Paralympic medallists made successful returns to the piste at the Para Fencing World Cup in Pisa, Italy.

South Korea’s Paris 2024 silver medallist, Hyo Kyeong Kwon, was the stand-out athlete once again in the women’s epee category A.

Kwon, who was making her season debut in Pisa, put in a strong performance across the day to land in the final against Great Britain’s Gemma Collis.

Collis was herself riding high after winning World Cup gold in Sao Paulo, Brazil, three weeks ago and secured herself another place in the final.

Kwon had the edge, but only by four points in the end, showing the quality of this particular event in the build up to the South Korean’s home World Championships in Iksan this September.

Hong Kong, China’s, Yu Chui Yee – a legend of the sport and a role model to many – finished in her latest World Cup top three. Poland’s Marta Fidrych claimed the other podium place.

All the action from the men’s foil and women’s epee can be watched back on World Abilitysport’s YouTube channel. Full results are available here.

On his return to the piste after his fourth Paralympic Games, Hungary’s Rio 2016 silver medallist Richard Osvath was on top once again in the men’s foil category A.

Osvath came up against Italy’s Matto Betti in the final and quickly stormed to a seven-point lead. As it looked like the Hungarian was lining up for an early bath, Betti showed why he is so respected on the circuit.

The Italian meticulously reduced the deficit to draw almost level with Osvath, proving his reputation for being a fighter.

But Osvath managed to stay calm and draw on all his experience, just edging a three point win.

Great Britain’s Oliver Lam-Watson landed on the podium for the first time since 2022 with bronze. He was joined by Poland’s Michal Nalewajek.

Ukraine’s Oleg Naumenko delivered a clinical yet stylish sky hook to seal gold in the men’s foil category B, matching his result from Pisa in November.

Competing against teammate Anton Datsko, Naumenko built a convincing lead and was showboating by the end to take the 15-8 win.

Italy’s second medal of the day came courtesy of Michele Massa who occupied third, alongside Japan’s Takaaki Sasajima who was delighted with his first World Cup medal.

Neutral Para Athlete (NPA) Kristina Fiaklistava triumphed in the women’s epee category B against NPA Viktoria Boykova with a 15-6 scoreline.

Hong Kong, China’s, Nga Ting Tong, secured her latest World Cup medal with bronze. On the other end of the scale, Dutch fencer Iris Tenkink returned to the podium in the same place she won her last medal back in 2021.

The Pisa 2025 Para Fencing World Cup continues on Friday (14 March) with the men’s sabre and women’s foil category A and B.
