Chunhee Park secured South Korea’s first gold of their home Para fencing World Championships in Iksan, South Korea, on Thursday (4 September).
Park emerged the victor from a close fight in the men’s category C with Latvia’s Dimitrijs Valainis. There was never more than three points between the pair but Valainis looked at one point as though he was going to get to 15 first as he achieved a two-point buffer.
Sensing a home world title was edging away from him, Park turned up the pressure and bought himself level. With the score at 14-14 it was Park who landed the decisive blow to bag South Korea gold.
Italy’s Ionela Andreea Mogos won her first foil world title in the women’s category B. The Italian’s victory never seemed in doubt as she carved out an expansive lead against China’s Kang Su. The match ended with a red card for Su, handing Mogos the gold, but the result was well-deserved.
“I am very glad, I am very happy because it is the first time I won a gold medal, so it’s a very good feeling.”
China’s Xiao Rong and and Neutral Para Athlete Viktoria Boykova claimed the bronze medals.
Chian added two more golds to the collection on Thursday.
In the men’s epee category B, Jie Zhang was pushed all the way to victory by Thailand’s Paralympic silver medallist Visit Kingmanaw.
Zhang appeared stunned by an early charge from his Thai opponent, rushing to catch-up with him to bring the scores level at 7-7.
Zhang just claimed the edge at 13-14 but Kingmanaw did not give up, bringing the scores level once again. A tense final exchange saw the Chinese fencer reach the magic 15 first.
Great Britain’s Paralympic champion Dimitri Coutya and China’s Beijing 2008 Paralympic champion Daoliang Hu of China grabbed the bronze.
The final of the women’s foil category A was an all-Chinese affair featuring Haiyan Gu and Yuandong Chen. Gu emerged the victor 15-10, denying Chen a second gold medal after she won the epee on Tuesday (2 September).
Ukraine’s Nataliia Morkvych and another Chinese fencer, Xufeng Zou, were the bronze medallists.
In the men’s epee category A Neutral Para Athlete Artur Yusopov overcame up-and-coming teammate Vadim Shenfeld for the world title.
Shenfeld landed himself a surprise place in the final having last competed at the World Cup in Eger, Hungary, where he finished 26th.
Yusopov’s greater experience shone through and carried him to the victory.
Türkiye’s Paris 2024 bronze medallist Hakan Akkaya repeated his bronze medal-winning performance from the 2023 World Championships. He was joined on the podium by Neutral Para Athlete Maxim Shaburov.
The Iksan 2025 Para Fencing World Championships continue on Friday (5 September) with the men’s team epee and women’s team foil.
The Iksan 2025 Para Fencing World Championships feature 240 fencers vying for medals in the men’s epee and foil category A, B and C, women’s epee and foil category A and B, men’s and women’s sabre category A and B as well as men’s and women’s team events, between 2-7 September.
