Fencers from South Korea, France, Thailand and Japan bagged gold medals in the men’s foil and women’s sabre on the opening day of the 2025 Para Fencing World Cup in Solo, Indonesia, on Monday (15 September).
On her first World Cup appearance of 2025, and after retaining her world title, Thailand’s Saysunee Jana continued her unbeaten run at this level in the women’s epee category B.
Jana faced Eun Hye Cho for gold, fencing the South Korean for the first time in epee since the 2024 Asian Championships in Nakhon Ratchasima. The outcome was the same with Cho unable to break Jana’s dominance.
Jana is unbeaten at a World Cup in the epee since 2020.
Poland’s Sara Rogowska excelled on Monday, securing her first World Cup medal with bronze. In contrast, Hong Kong, China’s, Nga Ting Tong is getting comfortable on the podium, claiming her latest bronze to add to a top three finish from Pisa, Italy.
In the men’s epee category A, France’s Damian Tokatlian also made the most of his first World Cup appearance this season. The French veteran grabbed his first gold since 2018 with a convincing 15-7 win over Germany’s Julius Haupt.
Haupt can however be pleased with his best ever performance with silver.

Japan’s Shintaro Kano and Thailand’s Phoopa Sae-Sim were the bronze medallists, with Sae-Sim experiencing the joy of a World Cup medal around his neck for the first time.
Japan’s Takaaki Sasajima was a first-time victor in the men’s foil category B, shocking Paris 2024 Paralympic silver medallist Visit Kingmanaw on his way to gold.
“I’m very surprised and very happy,” Sasajima said.
Hong Kong, China’s, Sean Glass was third next to South Korea’s Eun Hwan Ryu.
A stand-offish final took place in the women’s epee category A with South Korea’s Paralympic silver medallist Hyo Kyeong Kwon and Great Britain’s Gemma Collis.
With both women not able to score a touch within the time – twice – the match moved to one final minute with the score at 11-7. With that 60 seconds Collis had the priority and managed to bring herself back to within one point of Kwon.
Had she levelled the score, Collis would have won but with the seconds ticking away not even several attempts to land a hit on Kwon’s hand as she leant back as far as she could were successful. As a result, Kwon left with the gold but Collis’s latest silver still represents a good day’s work.
“It’s been quite some time since I met [Collis] and I have thought a lot about how to run through the match,” Kwon said. “I had run through the exceptions and all the plays in my head and because of this I was able to win the medal. I am very happy and very excited.”
Spain’s Judit Rodrigues Menendez and another South Korean, Sunmi Kim, completed the podium in third.
The Solo 2025 Para Fencing World Championships continue on Tuesday (16 September) with the women’s foil and men’s sabre category A and B.
