Para Fencing World Cup: Eger last stop ahead of World Championships

14/05/2025

Para Fencers are arriving in Eger, Hungary, for the third World Cup of 2025 and crucial last stop on the road to the 2025 Para Fencing World Championships in Iksan, South Korea.

Amongst those competing from 15-18 May – live on the World Abilitysport YouTube channel – will be a strong team from the host nation featuring a series of Paralympic medallists.

That includes members of the women’s foil team that won silver at Paris 2024 – Eva Andreja Hajmasi and Zsuzsanna Krajnyak.

Hajmasi and Krajnyak – one of the world’s most decorated Para fencers – will be in action in the individual women’s foil category A.

The former secured gold on her first outing of 2025 in Pisa, Italy, and is the top seed, whilst her teammate grabbed bronze.

Richard Osvath also made an impressive start to his season in Pisa in March. He will be on his home pistes hoping to win his second consecutive World Cup gold and maintain his position as the world No.1.

Whilst established faces will take their chances, World Para Fencing also continues to trial new team formats in all three weapons at World Cups with the aim of keeping the sport fresh and relevant.

A 20-point format was successfully trialled in Pisa whilst Eger will see the debut of a 30-point format in men’s sabre and epee and women’s foil.

That will mean six bouts per match, each with five points or lasting up to three minutes. As with all the pilots this season, fencers will only face an opponent from their own category.

Paralympic champions from the original men’s 45-point format, China, have entered the same team to the men’s team epee punctuated by athletes that could also do well in the individual events.

These include Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 champion Yanke Feng in the men’s sabre category B, who will make his season debut alongside his teammates.

It’s the same story in the women’s events as a series of Chinese champions appear for the first time since the last Paralympics.

Last year China’s women secured five of the eight individual and team golds on offer at the Grand Palais. Keep an eye out for newly minted Paralympic title winners Yuandong Chen in the epee category A, Xufeng Zou in the foil category A and Haiyan Gu from the sabre category A.

China also bagged two team golds in the women’s epee and foil. Chen, Gu and Zou will be joined by Paris 2024 silver medallist Xiao Rong in the foil in Eger to see what they can do in Sunday’s new team formats.

More top seeds will come from as far as South Korea as Hyo Kyeong Kwon continues her build-up to her home World Championships in Iksan in September. Paralympic silver medallist Kwon is already the owner of one World Cup epee gold from Pisa.

The Polish duo of Paris 2024 silver medallist and world No.1 Kinga Drozdz and multiple World Cup podium winner and top ranked fencer Adrian Castro are also not to be missed.

Action gets underway in Eger on Thursday (15 May) with the men’s foil and women’s epee category A and B. The new team event formats will round off competition with a bang on Sunday (18 May).
