Italian and Chinese fencers claimed the final four gold medals on offer at the 2025 Para Fencing World Cup in Eger, Hungary, on Saturday (17 May).

Italy’s Andreea Mogos triumphed in the women’s foil category B for her first win at this level since 2022.

Her last opponent was Japan’s Anri Sakurai, an athlete who is riding high after winning her first World Cup earlier in the season in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

But Mogos made use of the confidence gained from a more recent achievement, having eliminated Paris 2024 silver medallist Xiao Rong in an earlier round, and stormed to victory.

Hong Kong, China’s Nga Ting Tong and China’s Kang Su were the bronze medallists.

China’s Yang Chen, the Asian Games silver medallist, grabbed his first World Cup gold in the men’s sabre category A.

Chen beat world champion teammate Jianquan Tian for gold in an all-Chinese final.

Hungary’s Richard Osvath collected his second medal of the competition with bronze, following on from the same colour in the foil.

Osvath stood between Chen, Tian and Li Hao, another fencer from China who claimed the other bronze.

Paris 2024 bronze medallist Jie Zhang continued the form which saw him win his Paralympic medal last year in the men’s sabre category B.

A tense, technical tie filled with video referee requests saw Zhang emerge the victor over Neutral Para Athlete Timur Khamatshin, 15-11.

Poland’s Piotr Pawelko entered the fray for his first World Cup in 10 years, claiming bronze. Chinese fencing legend and multiple Paralympic medallist Yanke Feng was the other third-place finisher.

Haiyan Gu was the last Chinese individual gold medallist of Eger 2025 in the women’s foil category A.

Nataliia Morkvych tried her best to fend off Gu’s advances and land her own hits in an explosive display from both fencers. But it was not to be and Gu stretched away for a 15-8 win.

Hosts Hungary celebrated another bronze courtesy of Eva Andreja Hajmasi with bronze. Yuandong Chen also joined compatriot Gu on the podium.

Since Thursday Para fencers have been competing at the last World Cup ahead of the 2025 Para Fencing World Championships taking place in Iksan, South Korea, from 2-7 September. Tomorrow (Sunday) will feature men’s and women’s team events.
