Hong Kong, China, took both golds on offer in the mixed team foil and epee at the World Cup in Pisa, Italy, on Sunday (10 November), claiming historic wins.
Both events are new to the programme as part of a trial aiming to test how they work and keep wheelchair fencing fresh and exciting.
The format features two male and two female athletes fencing across four rounds. The first to 20 points is the winner.
Sean Glass, Yuen Hing Kwong, Ka Man Lam and Nga Ting Tong secured the first gold in the epee against Ukraine’s Eduard Kudenko, Oleg Naumenko, Mariia Ivanchy and Olga Yesina on Sunday morning.
The new format certainly delivered a nail-biting spectacle.
A stunning comeback from Tong in the final round saw her land an impressive seven points against Yesina, overcoming a slender two-point deficit.
Italy’s Salvatore De Falco, Emanuele Lambertini, Alessia Biagini and Julia Anna Markowska secured the bronze after a close semi-final loss against Ukraine, 20-17.
Hong Kong also took gold in the mixed team foil.
Yu Chui Yee was the star here, heading into her semi-final bout against Olga Yesina needing a small miracle to bring Hong Kong back into contention.
That is exactly what she did, reigning down 10 hits on Natalia Mandryk to take her team through to the final.
There Italy were this time waiting for them in their own hunt for gold.
Matteo Betti, Michele Massa, Alessia Biagini and Loredana Trigilia were the Italian line-up.
Yee once again scored 10 points against Trigilia to hand Hong Kong, China, a three-point lead.
Tong took her turn to be the anchor, handling the pressure excellently despite immense pressure from Biagini to reach a 20-17 victory.
Ukraine’s Naumenko was joined by teammates Oleksii Zakusylov, Nadiia Doloh and Nataliia Mandryk on the podium’s third spot.
The Pisa 2024 wheelchair fencing World Cup was the last competition of the 2024 season, a year which has seen regional Championships take place in Europe, Asia and the Americas as well as multiple World Cups in the build-up to a sell-out Grand Palais at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
