Individual bronze medallist from the category A Hyo Kyeong Kwon led the charge for South Korea against their mighty opponents in the newly introduced 30-point format. Here fencers also only face athletes from within their category. 

The new format seemed to have suited Kwon in particular, landing six hits in her first bout against Paralympic epee bronze medallist Haiyan Gu and then 11 against Zou Xufeng in her second. 

Individual bronze medallist from the category A Eun Hye Cho and Sunmi Kim also made their contributions towards maintaining the lead throughout the match. Even in the final clash between Kwon and Zou, where Zou scored 11 points, Kwon held her nerve and matched her blow for blow. 

Also taking home silver alongside Zou and Gu was Ao Lanzhu for China. 

Fans won’t have to wait long for the next chapter as the Asian Championships take place from 18-24 October. 

Poland bagged the final podium spot after Kinga Drozdz, Marta Fidrych and Karolina Strawkinska beat the team from Hong Kong, China. 

China were however successful in claiming the two other golds on offer on Wednesday. 

Li Hao, Saichun Zhong, Yang Cheng and Yanke Feng, who all made appearances on the individual podium this week, put in a strong performance against Ukraine. 

Andrii Demchuk, Oleksii Zakusylov, Oleg Naumenko and Dmytro Serozhenko will be pleased with their silver, as can France with bronze. 

Quentin Fernandez-Anssoux, Mathias Panisset, Thomas Tachdjian and Laurent Vadon return home with the third place. 

China’s Gu and Zou regrouped to secure a place in the final of the women’s team foil in the last event of Pattaya 2026. Joined by Yuandong Chen and Kang Su they were the victors. 

Their opponents, Thailand, fought hard to grab the last gold of the World Cup but it was not to be.  Thitirat Pengprasittipong, Aphinya Thongdaeng, Saysunee Jana and Suthin Sita settled for silver and another top three finish, providing encouraging signs ahead of the Asia Championships in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. 

South Korea also returned to the podium in the team foil. Cho, Kim and Kwon were the main protagonists in their win over Brazil with Yejin Jo in reserve. 

The Pattaya 2026 Para Fencing World Cup featured individual events across the men’s and women’s foil, epee and sabre with team events in foil and epee. All the action from the four days of competition can be watched back.

Athletes will now return to training for the final few weeks of build-up to the Paralympic qualification period for LA 2028 which begins on 1 October. European Championships are scheduled to take place in Cardiff, Great Britain, from 6-11 October. They will be followed by the Asian Championships and the Americas and African Championships from 27 October – 1 November.
