Golden Mogos: Italy secure home World Cup victory

20/02/2026

World champion Andreaa Mogos delivered hosts Italy their first gold medal at the 2026 Para Fencing World Cup in Pisa on Friday (20 February).

Competing in the women’s foil category B, Mogos emerged from a difficult semi-final against Thailand’s Saysunee Jana to face Neutral Para Athlete Irina Mishurova for gold.

The Italian’s tactics proved almost impossible to penetrate, with Mishurova managing to land just two hits.

Reflecting on her semi-final against Jana, Mogos said: “It was a very difficult bout because Saysunee is a great champion. I managed to keep the pressure up until the end.”

However the Italian remained modest at the suggestion that her star keeps rising after her first world title and several World Cup triumphs in 2025: “I am not number 1… some fencers are missing – China are not here – but I will carry on.”

Jana, the winner from Thursday’s epee, had to settle for bronze. Hong Kong, China’s, Nga Ting Tong took the second bronze medal.

But Italy did not have it all their own way on Friday. Ukraine’s Andrii Demchuck proved too hot for an in-form Edoardo Giordan to handle in the final of the men’s sabre category A.

Demchuk stormed to a 15-12 victory over the Italian and looked characteristically business-like in the process.

Germany’s Julius Haupt grabbed his latest podium finish in the sabre with bronze. Occupying the second bronze medal spot was Great Britain’s Oliver Lam Watson. Usually an epee and foil fencer who has competed sporadically in the individual sabre, Lam Watson’s latest venture delivered his first top three finish in the weapon.

Poland’s sabre master Adrian Castro breezed past Thailand’s Chitiphat Charoenta 15-4 in the final of the men’s sabre category B.

“I’m really happy with my last bout, especially the last two. All of the actions I planned, and it was well done,” Castro said.

Refugee athlete Amelio Castro repeated his performance from 2025 in Pisa with bronze. Andrea Jacquier of Italy celebrated a podium finish alongside Castro.

It was an all-Hungarian final in the women’s sabre category A, with one of the team’s veterans facing one of their up-and-coming fencers.

Eva Andreja Hajmasi is no stranger to a final but neither is 20-year-old Anna Nadasdy who is succesfully following in her footsteps. Indeed Nadasy would add to her gold medal from 2025 to secure her latest top three finish.

Ukraine’s Nataliya Morkvych and Hong Kong, China’s, Yu Chui Yee are no strangers to the podium and added to their collections with a bronze each.

The Pisa 2026 Para Fencing World Cup continues on Saturday (21 February) with the last individual events. Medals are on offer in the men’s epee and women’s sabre category B.
