Italy’s Paris 2024 Paralympic silver medallist Edoardo Giordan delivered the gold the hosts had been waiting for in the men’s sabre category A.

  1. The world No.2 faced old foe Richard Osvath of Hungary in the final after easing through from the table of eight.

Osvath found his journey to the gold medal match a little more challenging. He had to see off German Paralympic champion Maurice Schmidt for a place in the semi-final before coming head-to-head with Ukraine’s Rio 2016 Paralympic champion Andrii Demchuk. That was also a rematch of the final of Rio 2016.

But both men arrived equally determined to take gold leading to a thrillingly close tie.

Giordan was able to use the home advantage to just edge Osvath by two touches.

Demchuk was joined in bronze medal position by teammate Artem Manko for a double Ukrainian medal haul in the event.

Poland’s Tokyo 2020 Paralympic silver medallist Adrian Castro returned to competition for the first time since agonisingly missing out on the podium in Paris.

As one of the world’s consistently top sabreists, Castro made the journey to his fourth Paralympic Games full of expectation. Sadly it was not meant to be in the French capital but Castro has chosen to carry on and reclaimed his place on the top of the podium in Pisa against teammate Adam Jablonski. It was his 17th World Cup gold.

“I am happy if I can fight with him in the final but I have my job and I have to win,”. Castro said of the clash with his compatriot. “I just like to win, Focus on this, focus on each point and try and do my best.”

In contrast Jablonska celebrated his first World Cup medal with his silver.

Italy added another medal courtesy of Gianmarco Paolucci with bronze. In the other bronze medal position refugee athlete Amelio Castro, competing under the World Abilitysport flag, secured the first medal of his career.

Hungary’s Eva Andreja Hajmasi was the victor on her season debut in the women’s foil category A.

Almost stealing the show was Hong Kong, China’s, seven-time Paralympian Yu Chui Yee, her opponent in the final who had ousted Hajmasi’s teammate Zsuzsanna Krajnyak in tough match in the semis.

It was Hajmasi who had the edge on this occasion.

Krajnyak settled for bronze alongside Ukraine’s Nataliia Morkvych.

In the final of the women’s foil category B Neutral Para Athlete Viktoriia Boykova emerged triumphant from a close tie with Neutral Para Athlete Irina Mishurova, 15-13.

The Netherlands’ Iris Tenkink collected her second medal in as many days with bronze, following on from her bronze in epee from Thursday.

The Pisa 2025 Para Fencing World Cup continues on Saturday (15 March) with the men’s epee and women’s sabre category A and B.
