Hong Kong, China’s, Yuen Hing Kwong and South Korea’s Eun Hwan Ryu claimed their place in the history books on Tuesday (16 September), winning their first Para Fencing World Cup golds in Solo, Indonesia.
Kwong sailed through the qualifying rounds to make his first appearance in the World Cup top three count in the men’s sabre category A.
His opponent, Thailand’s Boonsiri Sanitmuanwai, had dispatched German Paralympic champion Maurice Schmidt in the semi-final and was therefore riding high.
But beating Kwong proved to be a step too far for the Thai fencer as he faced a man on the march. It was however no cake walk with a close final score of 15-14.
Schmidt had to settle for bronze on this occasion. He was joined in third by France’s Serge Robin.
South Korea’s Eun Hwan Ryu was another first-time gold medallist in Solo on Tuesday.
Returning after a few years away from Para fencing with illness, Ryu stormed to a 15-11 win against France’s Laurent Vadon.
Thailand’s Visit Kingmanaw doubled his medal haul from this World Cup with bronze, as did Hong Kong, China’s, Sean Glass. Both men also finished on the podium in Monday’s foil.
But it was a day of contrasts in Solo. As well as the first-timers, two veterans of Para fencing excelled.
Thailand’s Paralympic champion Saysunee Jana won her second gold in Solo in the women’s foil category B.
In what felt like Ground Hog Day, Jana took on South Korea’s Eun Hyo Cho in the final as she had done in the epee on Monday, coming back against a 4-0 deficit to claim the top prize 15-7.
Hong Kong, China’s, Nga Ting Tong also appeared on the podium again with bronze to add to her bronze from the previous day. Irma Khetsuriani represented Georgia once more to claim the other bronze.
Hong Kong, China’s, Yu Chui Yee returned to the top of the women’s foil category A podium for the first time since 2023.
An impressive performance from Yee, which saw her cope the best with the balmy conditions, included a final victory against Spain’s Paralympic bronze medallist Judith Rodriguez.
“I have been fencing with Judith quite a few times and actually last year, I lost to her in Paris [2024] for the bronze medal match so I did prepare something when I fenced with Judith again,” Yee said. “Today Judith also did very well but I think I was just a bit better than her because I managed the distance. Maybe I am also more comfortable with the hot weather because we are all from Asia, so I have a better performance so I got the gold medal. I want to congratulate all the other medallists today.”
Georgia’s Nina Tibilashvili and South Korea’s Hyo Kyeong Kwon were the bronze medallists, themselves also seasoned World Cup podium finishers who were able to use their experience to land a medal on Tuesday.
The Solo 2025 Para Fencing World Cup continues on Wednesday with the women’s sabre and men’s epee category A and B.
