Fierce foil: Iksan 2025 Para fencing Worlds to show world’s best
03/09/2025
The stage is set for more than 240 of the world’s best wheelchair fencers to compete at the 2025 Para Fencing World Championships in Iksan, South Korea, from 2-7 September.
All competitions will be shown live at World Abilitysport’s YouTube channel, with expert commentary from Paralympians Cyril More and Lauryn DeLuca and Olympic and Paralympic fencing commentator, Karim Bashir.
Let’s take a closer look at the foil which is expected to showcase the world’s best sleight of hand and quick thinking.
Women’s foil
A deep field across both category A and B is present in Iksan.
In the category A, all four Paris 2024 medallists will be in action, including Paralympic champion Zou Xufeng from China. The country is a strong force in Para fencing but a particularly in foil. Xufeng will be challenged by, amongst others, her teammates Yuandong Chen and Haiyan Gu.
In the category B, Thailand’s Saysunee Jana will try to improve on her bronze from the 2023 World Championships as the current Paralympic gold medallist. Jana already topped the podium in epee earlier this week but as is widely known, the Thai fencer is very capable across weapons.
Men’s foil
Great Britain’s Dimitri Coutya enters Iksan 2025 as the Paralympic champion from the category B. In 2023 Coutya reached the podium, claiming bronze, but is sure to want to do better.
One of his main contenders will be China’s Yanke Feng, a fencer with a respected pedigree of his own as the defending champion and the new title holder from sabre.
In the category A, Hungary’s Richard Osvath and Italy’s Emanuele Lambertini are respective world No.1 and No.2 who have made the journey to Iksan in the search for silverware. Lambertini brings the advantage of being the current title holder.
In the category C, Ukraine’s Serhii Shavkun has maintained his position as top seed but Italy’s Leonardo Rigo is a one to watch as the gold medallist from the last World Championships.
Team foil
In the men’s team foil, France come together once again after raising the roof of the Grand Palais at Paris 2024 to win bronze. Paralympic champions China and silver medallists Great Britain are amongst those the French will have to face-down to secure a place on the podium.
In the women’s, China are expected to put on a show of strength once again as the returning title-holders whilst both Italy and Hungary have their own claim to stake as 2023 and Paris 2024 podium-finishers.
The Iksan 2025 Para Fencing World Championships feature 240 fencers vying for medals in the men’s epee and foil category A, B and C, women’s epee and foil category A and B, men’s and women’s sabre category A and B as well as men’s and women’s team events, between 2-7 September.
Iksan 2025 takes place exactly one year after the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games and three years before the LA 2028 Paralympics.
