Echoes of Paris 2024 at Eger Para Fencing World Cup
16/05/2025
Action from the 2025 Para Fencing World Cup took on a familiar vibe in Eger, Hungary, on Friday (16 May) as old scores resurfaced
The battle for the women’s sabre category A was a replay of the final at Paris 2024.
Poland’s Kinga Drozdz once again took on China’s Haiyan Gu. Back in September it was Gu who emerged the victor but not without a strong challenge from Drozdz and Friday was no different.
Both women are no strangers to the final but Paralympic champion Gu retained her edge, winning 15-7.
Hungary made it onto the podium for the second time this week courtesy of up-and-coming fencer Anna Nadasdy, the Under 23 world champion, who took bronze. Ukraine’s Nataliia Morkvych claimed the other bronze, showing her medal winning potential still persists.
All the action can be watched back on World Para Fencing’s website. Photos are also available for editorial use here.
After today Latvia’s Olegs Garkuls-Gurevics has now appeared in his second consecutive final in the men’s epee category B, showing his growing strength in the weapon. The gold was not to be for the Latvian as he faced a tough bout against China’s World Championships bronze medallist Jie Zhang.
Zhang peppered Garkuls-Gurevics with 15 hits with six in reply to win the gold and leave his opponent with silver.
Ukraine’s Anton Datsko and China’s Qin Bin were the bronze medallists.
China’s Saichun Zhong won his second gold in as many days in the men’s epee category A.
Zhong has been a regular competitor in the weapon although did not compete at Paris 2024, instead focusing on the foil. But he may have been swayed to take it up more regularly on Friday after his first World Cup win, against Neutral Para Athlete Maxim Shaburov who had to settle for silver.
Great Britain’s Oliver Lam-Watson can be pleased with his bronze, his first in epee since 2021. Another Neutral Para Athlete, Artur Yusopov, stood alongside him on the podium.
Ukraine’s Olena Fedota-Isaeva was the next athlete to make a second appearance on the podium in Eger, winning the women’s sabre category B to be the only athlete from outside China to land on top on Friday.
Fedota-Isaeva’s win against Neutral Para Athlete Anastasiya Kastiuchkova added to her bronze from yesterday’s epee.
Andreea Mogos and Irma Khetsuriani were the bronze medallists.
Individual events conclude at Eger 2025 on Saturday with the women’s foil and men’s sabre. Sunday will see trial events for team events with quicker, more exciting formats being tested.
