China bagged three golds medals to open the 2025 World Para Fencing World Championships in Iksan, South Korea, on Tuesday (2 September) in the women’s epee and men’s sabre.
China’s Yuandong Chen was the victor in the women’s epee category A, overcoming compatriot Xufeng Zou 15-12.
South Korea got the home medal they wanted in the women’s epee category A. Paralympic silver medallist Hyo Kyeong Kwon didn’t quite get the finish she had hoped for but can still be proud of her first World Championships medal at the age of 24.
Neutral Para Athlete Alena Evdokimova took the second bronze.
Thailand’s Paralympic champion Saysunee Jana retained her title from the last World Championships in Terni, Italy, in 2023 in the women’s epee category B.
China’s Shumei Tan had to settle for bronze, coming up against Karolina Strawinksa in her last match of the day.
Neutral Para Athlete Ludmila Vasileva was the other bronze medallist.
In the men’s sabre category B, China’s Yanke Feng returned to the piste after winning gold at Paris 2024, having already put speculation that he may retire after his third Paralympics firmly to bed in 2025.
He faced teammate Jie Zhang for gold, putting in a masterclass performance to take victory once more, and for the second time this season to follow-on from his recent World Cup win in Eger, Hungary.
Poland’s Adrian Castro picked up his third consecutive men’s sabre category B medal, this time taking bronze by overcoming Chitipat Charoenta of Thailand.
Ukraine’s Dmytro Serozhenko also took bronze in a face-off with Panagiotis Triantafyllou of Greece.
The final of the men’s sabre category A was another all-Chinese affair featuring Jianquan Tian and Yang Cheng.
By securing a place in the final, Tian had already improved on his bronze from 2023 but faced an intense and difficult final. With the score at 14:14, it was Tian who was able to hold his nerve the firmest.
Italy’s Edoardo Giordan and China’s Li Hao both took a bronze medal each.
Action continues in Iksan on Wednesday (3 September) with the first of the team events where fencers will switch their focus from individual medals to team events in women’s epee and men’s sabre.
