Chitiphat Charoenta secured home gold for Thailand in the men's epee category A at the Para Fencing World Cup with a stunning win in Pattaya on Sunday (30 August).
The 28-year-old showed his victory from the last World Cup was no fluke, getting past Ukraine’s Oleg Naumenko in the final with a convincing 15-9 win.
“I am really happy for today to get a gold medal for Thailand as we know there are many countries participating in this event. I’m really proud to represent Thailand,” Chaorenta, who won despite getting cramp in his arm in the final, said: “You have to keep going to get the win that you want.”
China’s Benjun Qin won his latest podium finish with third. South Korea’s Jin Sol Lee grabbed his first.
China enjoyed a great day on the piste, grabbing double gold in the women’s sabre category B and men’s epee category A.
Shumei Tan’s performance in the sabre was one of the headlines of the day with her gold following a gap from World Cup competition.
Tan delivered a cool, calm and collected 15-5 victory over South Korea’s Eun Hye Cho.
“I think it was harder for me to win again because in the last several years I had a baby so I have been out for a long time,” Tan said.
Having secured the Paralympic title at Tokyo 2020 but not competing at Paris 2024, Tan’s return is both well-timed and well executed. With the LA 2028 less than two years away, the Chinese fencer reflected on the road to the next Paralympics.
“I haven’t thought so far ahead so for me I need to try my best to win every game, every competition.”
China’s Jingjing Zhou and Ukraine’s Olena Fedota-Isaieva were the bronze medallists.
Yang Cheng excelled in the epee on Sunday, adding to his previous success in the foil and sabre.
Cheng was the victor against teammate Liqiang Chen. Germany’s Maurice Schmidt, the European bronze medallist, and Neutral Para Athlete Maxim Shaburov secured bronze.
Poland’s European champion Kinga Drozdz won her third World Cup gold in a row in the women’s sabre catgeory A against an unsettled Jing Bian of China.
Bian had suffered from issues with her fencing chair in both the semi-final and final, with one of her front stabiliser wheels falling off.
Drozdz had her own challenges to face on her way to the final, noting that the conditions in the venue were not ideal for her.
It was Drozdz who had the steel and determination to power through the strongest in the end, executing a 15-6 over Bian.
“I’m super happy and proud my myself because I worked very hard top develop my fencing, and in the case of very difficult air conditioning here it was a really good day for me,” Drozdz said.
Drozdz also got past Paris 2024 Paralympic champion Haiyan Gu in the semi-final, in a replay of the gold medal match from the last Paralympics.
This time Gu had to settle for bronze alongside teammate Qiyuan Peng.
The Pattaya 2026 Para Fencing World Cup continues on Monday with the men’s sabre and women’s foil. It is the last competition ahead of the opening of the qualification window for the LA 2028 Paralympics.
